On May 8th and 9th, 2010, the Clover Palmetto Octagon Club lent a helping hand to the Lake Wylie Department of Parks and Recreation. President Nicole Phillips contacted the members of the Palmetto club and explained that help was needed in raking little league baseball and soccer fields. The high school students spent seven hours over the two days picking up trash, raking the infields, raking the soccer fields, raking the track, hauling large rocks from the ball fields, and cleaning up the playgrounds. The six members of the Octagon club also raked the trail leading to the outdoor classroom at Crowder’s Creek Elementary School in order for the school to prepare outdoor desks for the learning space. They even removed fallen branches off of the path in order to ensure the safety of the students. The Palmetto Octagon Club is sponsored by the Clover Optimist Club of Clover, South Carolina. They have 20 members ranging in age from 14-18. This high school group is very active in their community and is always looking for more ways they can help.
